8 Ways to Reinvent Your Giving This Giving Tuesday

Do you celebrate Giving Tuesday in your home or office? It’s the Tuesday following Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and for many, the most important day of that retail-centered week. Since 2012, Giving Tuesday has focused attention on doing things that benefits others, and maybe, giving our priorities a reboot. According to GivingTuesday.org, 75% of organizations use Giving Tuesday as a chance to try something new.  So, in that spirit, here are 8 creative ways to fire up your philanthropy.  Happy GT!

  • Kick off the Season with a Winter Coat Drive – Everyone needs one, but too many homeless and indigent people face the chilly holidays without a warm coat. For helpful advice, check out One Warm Coat online.
  • Create a Holiday Gift Wish List for your organization to purchase for people in need.
  • Show your Support for Veterans in Need – On Giving Tuesday, Veteran’s Resort sponsors programs like Backpacks for Heroes, where you can give back to those who’ve given so much.
  • Create a Giving Fair at your School or Campus – like a job fair, a Giving Fair showcases various ways to give back, while acting as a brokerage to bring energetic volunteers together with local causes.
  • Adopt a Grandparent – Washington, D.C.’s Seabury Resources for Aging connects volunteers of all ages with seniors who need household help to maintain independent living. Find similar organizations in your home town at KidsThatDoGood.com, or simply talk to seniors on your block, and ask how you can help out.
  • Organize a “Trashion Fashion” Show – Each year, the Solid Waste Disposal District of Lopez Island, Washington – a local disposal site, recycling center and swap meet aimed at “Zero Waste” – sponsors a fundraiser fashion show (see above) where “trashionistas” walk the runway in waste-recycled couture. Learn more at TrashionFashion.org and the Lopez Island Solid Waste Disposal District website.
  • Encourage Others with UNselfies – Giving promotes giving, so share your generosity and get your friends and family to join in. Be sure to include your cause’s logo and a call to action.
  • Bring the Family – The most enduring way to give back may simply be teaching the next generation how to participate. For more ideas, visit the family page at GivingTuesday.org, and the Teacher Resources page at KidsThatDoGood.com.
