Five Volunteer Opportunities for Teens in Houston this Summer

Today’s teens have a bad rep as self-absorbed, disconnected Linksters. But, in fact, teens are out there looking for volunteer opportunities, and we’re here to help.

According to the Millennial Impact Report, today’s teens and young adults are involved, engaged and committed.  84% made a charitable donation in 2014, the year of the study, and 70% spent at least an hour volunteering for a cause that they care about. They give their time and their talents in all kinds of surprising and creative ways, and go out of their way to support the causes they’re passionate about.

If you’re looking to volunteer, now’s the time! With summer almost here, there are lots of great opportunities for teens like you to volunteer in the Houston area, from helping the homeless, to gardening, to feeding children, and so much more!  Here are five ways that you can give back to your community this season, and earn valuable volunteer experience as well:

1. The Beacon

• What they do: Provide services to the poor and homeless in Houston.
• How you can help: Kitchen work and laundry.

2. Urban Harvest

• What they do: Teach organic gardening.
• How you can help: Build and maintain school and community gardens and help sell trees.

3. Multicultural Education and Counseling Through the Arts

• What they do: Help underserved youth and adults through arts and cultural programming, academic excellence, support services, and community building.
• How you can help: Serve as tutors, assist with special events, marketing or fundraising activities.

4. Children’s Museum of Houston

• What they do: Deliver innovative learning opportunities for children up to 12 years of age.
• How you can help: Interact with visitors, assist staff in the exhibits, and/or help the administrative staff.

5. Houston Food Bank

• What they do: Distribute meals to children in need.
• How you can help: Prepare hot meals.
