It seems that thought leaders from all over the internet seem to enjoy looking down on today’s “self-absorbed” teens. But are Linksters really one of history’s most self-absorbed generations? Maybe teens are actually looking for volunteer opportunities even though no one is watching.
In fact, according to the Millennial Impact Report, today’s teens and young adults are involved, engaged and committed. 84% made a charitable donation in 2014, the year of the study, and 70% spent at least an hour volunteering for a cause that they care about. They give their time and their talents in all kinds of surprising and creative ways, and go out of their way to support the causes they’re passionate about.

With summer almost here, there are lots of great opportunities for teens like you to volunteer in the Phoenix area, from caring for animals, to working with refugees, to protecting the environment, and so much more! Here are five ways that you can give back to your community this season, and earn valuable volunteer experience as well:
- What they do: Rescues animals in need and help them get adopted.
- How you can help: Care for animals, help with fundraising and adoption events, prepare bulk mailings, maintain and repair the shelter, clean up the yard, and take photos of pets.
- What they do: Work with youth, the homeless, and the impoverished through services and programs.
- How you can help: Help assemble snack packs, school readiness kits, assist at Food Bank and other events and services.
- What they do: Help refugee families get started by donating furniture, household goods, clothing and a warm welcome.
- How you can help: Sorting and packing, mobile clothes closet, home visits.
- What they do: Provide shelter and support services to women, children, men, and pets affected by domestic violence and human trafficking.
- How you can help: Spend time with families, help with daily tasks, assist with education and other programs.
- What they do: Preserve desert parks and mountain preserves.
- How you can help: Trail monitoring, maintaining trailhead gates, assisting with litter pick up, providing educational information to park users.
